During the summer months it is hard to get kids to want to learn. I don't blame them, summer is a time for swim lessons, soccer camp, and many other outdoor activities. How do we get our youngsters to want to learn and study. I have a few things that I do with my girls over the summer that helps them stay interested in learning.
The first activity is the summer reading program at the library. This is a free program and can be found in any public library. This is beneficial to my girls in different ways. One, it helps instill a love of reading. Two, it gets them out of the house. Three, it is fun for them. My girls love to pick out there books. But to me the most important is that it teaches them that there is more to the world then the internet. That there is a place you can go that is just for books.
Children physically holding a book is extremely important; however, lets not forget the internet. I know it contradicts my last paragraph, but the internet does hold a wealth of info that will engage children in learning. I am just going to briefly mention several fun learning sites. These sites have games and activities for all school age groups.
1. abcya.com –
This one I just discovered yesterday. So far my girls love it. It has mostly reading and math games. There are other fun games.
2. pbskids.org -
This one is a classic site that offers a good verity of game with well none characters like Sesame Street, and others This one is geared toward younger kids, but it does have good science games for older kids.
3. bbc.co.uk/schools/games/ -
This one is one of the best sites geared toward learning. It has games and activities in every subject and age group. I highly recommend this site.
Keep in mind. Though summer is a time of play it can be a time of learning too.
