This is my first entry and right now it is Summer Vacation. My girls are sleeping in, so I am writing you today. I am going to be talking about a couple of things today. First, I will give my view on how to determine whether a resource would be beneficial. Then, I will go over a web resource that I've found that may aid in helping us teach our children. Ultimately that is our goal, to have our children learn and grow.
I have a simple method of evaluating a potential resource. In fact, I only use three steps. These steps are: engaging, encouraging, and relevant. These steps are fairly self-explanatory; however, I will go over them in some detail, so that we are all on the same page, sorta speak.
Step One: Engaging. In this step, I look at whether the resource would have enough attraction to my daughters. For example, are the color vibrant, do they utilize fun characters, etc. This step is subjective. It will depend on the child. If you are not sure the found resource would engage your child, ask them. They will tell you.
Step Two: Encouraging. In this step, I look at whether the resource has a way of rewarding my child. It could be stickers, a certificate, a “high five”, something. It is important for a child to feel excited about continuing to use the resource. Again, each child is different, and what would encourage one child wont encourage another, so ask.
Step Three: To me this is the most important step. This step is were you evaluate whether the resource is age appropriate, offer the right learning curriculum, things in this nature. This is important because a resource designed for a Pre-Schooler would be engaging and encouraging for a First Grader, but will the content help in aiding the child's learning. It may or may not, only you can answer that question.
The bottom line is, if the found resource feels all the steps, it is a good resource, and should be used.
I am going to briefly talk about the resource that I've found. It is called K5 Stars. It is a resource that I have used. It does have a fee for usage but it is minimal. It offers over 300 learning games. It is a good resource that meets the three steps for my kids. See for yourself it my meet yours too.
